One half of you can take down the ticker tape. The other half can call off the firing squad. Against all odds, Eidos Montreal’s Thief reboot has managed to slink between nostalgia-flavoured excellence on one side and forumite-death-threat-incurring disaster on the other, dodging both to arrive safely at, “yeah, quite good.”

Thief’s got a new PS4 trailer explaining more about the experience in case the title wasn’t enough of a clue. The game’s out February 28th and is promising a massively flexible experience, from how you plan your heist to a completely customisable HUD. In its current state, Thief doesn’t make a lot of sense. I’m not talking about the cartoonishly evil villains who shoot lackeys in the face for sport (good lackeys are hard to find), or Garrett’s incongruous aversion to murder but total readiness to rob the City’s starving poor of their last copper coin. What doesn’t make sense is how two and a half years after Deus Ex: Human Revolution, developers Eidos Montreal have made a game that less than a month before release has taken several steps backwards from Adam Jensen’s excellent cyberpunk stealth-em-up.

Thief PS4

A bunch of new Thief screens have surfaced showing more of the stealth reboot. It’s looking a little ‘old gen’ if I’m honest. Especially when you consider screens are usually brushed up. There were rumours that hefty delays were due to this jumping generations from PS3 to PS4 (it was originally in development alongside Deus Ex Human Revolution). Despite the time these shots suggest it might not reach the old-gen porting bar set by Assassin’s Creed 4.

The strange thing with Thief on PS4 is, having Garrett perform third-person takedowns and search for loot using the now ubiquitous focus mode (seriously, Square, what gives? Court-ordered mandate?) doesn’t feel all that wrong.
