CD Projekt RED have released some new The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt screens showing an amazing level of environmental detail in the world, as well as Geralt looking at things really hard. Some serious, stern gazing going on there. Not actually helping, just really taking it all in.

You see that grotesque, three-eyed beast over there? Yeah, the one with the antlers big enough to impale a dozen men with a single head flick. There are many of his kind in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PS4. But what do you know about him besides the fact that he’d appreciate it if you’d kindly refrain from picking wildflowers in his pasture? Well, if you don’t mind us spoiling the surprise, he’s called a Friend. (Oh wait, our mistake – it’s Fiend, definitely not Friend.) He’s got a devastating ram attack and a third eye on his forehead that emits a debilitating spell. In short, he’s a nasty one.

It’s not the visuals or the size that impress most in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PS4 – though both are remarkable. It’s the attention to detail and production values that have gone into what is only a side-mission. With multi-part objectives, a cast of supporting characters, cutscenes and an ending cinematic, this is more effort than most games put into their main quests.

These new The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt screens from Gamescom really do suggest the REDengine 3 tech behind them is a seriously impressive piece of kit. Especially considering this is an open world game rather than a linear adventure.

The Witcher 3: the Wild Hunt has been officially confimed for PS4 release by developer CD Projekt Red. This will be the first outing for The Witcher series on PlayStation, and will come with a completely new next gen engine named “REDengine 3,” promising a story-driven yet open world RPG.
