Having played the game from start to finish and accrued more than a few S ranks along the way, I’ve decided to bestow upon you the gory fruits of my violent labours. The blood oranges of my experience if you will. Or, you know, the 9 things I wish I’d known before I started.

When you finish DmC for the first time, the most notable of the virtual trinkets, baubles and inevitable concept art you unlock is the first chunk of a three-part reskin for Dante. It enables you to give him white hair. Thing is, you won’t want to use it. Because by the time you’ve got to the end of the game – by the time you’ve come to really know the new Dante and understand everything that his extended family at Ninja Theory has achieved with its relentlessly on-point reimagining of Devil May Cry – any move back towards the trappings of the old series will feel like a ludicrous retrograde step.

If you’ve not downloaded the DmC demo yet then here’s a 45 minute video of the game in action. It really is good so try not to get all upset that Dante’s hair is a different colour. From what I played the fighting feels great and while the mechanically it’s different – using left and right angel and devil triggers to modify attack – the sense of tactically opening up groups, or weakening enemies feels just as strong as any game in the series.
