Dirt Showdown PS3 preview: Should Motorstorm be worried?

Dirt Showdown PS3

Inside Dirt 3, there were two games. One pitted you against the savage Finnish countryside in fully-licensed rally cars and demanded pinpoint powersliding; the other plonked you in Battersea powerstation, and just wanted you to make a mess. To move the franchise forward, Codemasters are basically splitting the atom – Dirt Showdown isn’t Dirt 4, instead it takes Dirt 3′s light-hearted, tyre-smoking muckaround moments, and turns it all up to…

Driver San Francisco PS3 review online

Playing Driver: San Francisco online is a bit like being in that ridiculous car chase scene from The Matrix Reloaded. If you haven’t seen it (you lucky thing), it involves a bunch of car-hopping agents that can possess any driver on the highway, essentially turning their cars into four-wheeled bullets. Bullets that are then aimed directly at you.

Here’s the thing racing drivers won’t tell you: just how afraid they get behind the wheel. If you could hear their collective heartbeats as they sit on the grid waiting for the race to start, you’d think you’d accidentally gatecrashed a drum and bass revival festival. Releasing that intensity onto players is the Holy Grail of driving game developers around the globe and EA’s Shift 2 Unleashed is the latest…

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit online

You’d think with eight players almost breaking the sound barrier as they streak through the gorgeously rendered highways of Seacrest County, Hot Pursuit’s servers would feel the strain. There’d be a bit of lag. A connection failure or two. Yet in more than 20 hours of blistering multiplayer, none of that happened.

Gran Turismo 5

Monza, in the rain. Calsonic Skyline GT-R, in-car. Should anyone ever want to be fast-tracked into realising how good Gran Turismo 5 can be, I’d humbly suggest this deceptively simple combination is all they’ll need.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit

Need For Speed’s been rubbish for ages. Last year’s Shift was okay, but ever since the modding bubble burst, and it turned out that doing donuts in Sainsbury’s car park wasn’t the coolest way to spend a Friday night, the series – which felt increasingly tailored to the stickers and fat exhaust crowd – fell away.

MotorStorm Apocalypse

Hands up if you can’t wait for the world to end. Hands down if it’s only because you want to go looting and fight zombies. Anyone with their hand still up is allowed inside the supercharged murder truck for a spin in earth-tearing racer MotorStorm Apocalypse. Forget the miserable deserts of Fallout: if Armageddon is anything like this, it’s going to be ace.

Test Drive Unlimited

TDU2 only makes sense in its own world. At one point, I found myself level grinding haircuts. Want to read that sentence again? It’s okay, I’ll wait. Of course, before long, reality rears its head and protests that TDU2 isn’t up to the standards of other PS3 racers, and reality’s right. But there’s a lot of game on offer here if you’re willing to humour it.

Gran Turismo 5 online

Here’s a shock: Gran Turismo 5 online is a mixture of confusion, frustration and occasional brilliance. At times, navigating its baroque menus and drumming your fingers raw waiting for races to start, you begin to think it couldn’t be less friendly without spraying petrol in your eyes.

F1 2011 review

After playing one of Codemasters’ F1 games you walk away understanding just how good everyone involved in the real sport must be. Those guys changing the tyres are the fastest tyre-changers in the world. Nobody pumps petrol better than the guy behind that hose. Nobody builds a more impressive machine than the guys in the factory back home, and nobody drives like the 24 drivers who take to the track…
