Playing the first hour of Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 is like speed running through the three emotions you feel throughout the rest of the game: amazement, frustration and disappointment. A searing opening introduces you to Gabriel Belmont’s brilliant new arsenal – the Void Sword, Chaos Claws and Shadow Whip – and then asks, “can you stick them into that golden angel bloke, and this golem the size of a small mountain range?” With pleasure. It’s a perfect tutorial – grandiose, mildly challenging and an instant reminder of why we loved the first game so damned much.

It’s way too late for spoilers at this point but the original CLOS had the greatest ending sting ever when Gabriel smashed through a window and revealed he’d lived through to modern times. These new Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 screens give us a closer look at the city environments you can explore.

“This is us on our own, with a clear vision of where we want to take the story.” David Cox has a hell of a lot of conviction when we ask him about developing Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 without the assistance of Hideo Kojima. And we can see why Konami’s head of European development is so confident. After all, the original Lords Of Shadow is one of PS3’s biggest and best adventures, and this massively exciting follow-up looks set to suck its predecessor’s arteries dry.

I know some you hate it when I say the first Castlevania was better than GOW3 but it was. More creative, bigger scale and the best ending twist I’ve seen in a while. Hence my excitement for any new Castlevania Lords Of Shadow 2 screens.

Developer Mercurysteam benefitted from the element of surprise with the first Lords Of Shadow. Even with Kojima (loosely) involved, there was a suspicion that a Castlevania game designed by a team in Madrid, and not Koji Igarashi, would come out poorly in comparison. Instead, we got an epic. It’s a shame that last word has been overused to meaninglessness, because the 20 hours of Lords Of Shadow deserve the accolade – the game was constantly shifting, as Gabriel Belmont’s powers built throughout, before ending with him, humanity all but gone, enshrined in Dracula’s throne.

Two things we know from the end of the first Castlevania – Gabriel goes bad, and he ends up in the future. Oh don’t moan about spoilers if you haven’t played it by now you’re never going to. These new screens show both of those things happening.

Castlevania lords of shadow 2

I’m going to whisper this: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was better than God Of War 3. It was a criminally underrated game so don’t miss the sequel. Here we see Gabriel go full on vamp with a teasing glimpse of the modern day setting teased at the end of the last game.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2

No info or anything, just a single Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 screen tweeted by producer Dave Cox. It looks like he took a picture of a TV screen judging by the light fitting reflected in the top right). It’s interesting as well because it doesn’t quite tie into the ending of the first game.
