    FIFA WC 1

I seem to be starting most of my conversations with these five words lately, but here goes anyway: in a recent Reddit thread, Americans were asked what they like best about Europe. Some said the abundance of historical architecture. Some said the chips. And one said “The electric feeling in the streets of a country whose team is currently playing in the Euro or World Cup.”

    PS4 console & menu

I was struck while moving house recently by the discovery of a PS2 memory card. I thought of the contents – a PES 5 master league, a Resi 4 save, a near-full collection of Burnout 3 cars. A series of lives, interrupted. I hadn’t said goodbye to any of this stuff – it was just left, in progress, in a box on a shelf.

The Last Of Us Screens and art

This is not the game you think it is. Everything you’ve heard so far has been about the emotion and the characters, about how Uncharted studio Naughty Dog is focusing on cinematic storytelling and human drama. Sensibly wary of being pushed into a narrow horror genre slot, the studio has euphemistically labelled the game ‘survival action’, the downside being that this could reasonably describe any game in which things are moving and you’re trying not to be dead. However, what none of this has touched upon is that The Last Of Us is absolutely bloody terrifying.

    007 legends review

The official line on making a Bond game using a greatest hits compilation of missions is that it’s a way of celebrating the series’ big 50th anniversary. Realistically, though, it sounds like the budget option, an easy way of recycling content to ease the infamously manic production schedule of a movie tie-ins. Predictably, in the case of 007 Legends, reality wins.

    Future PS3

When rumours of PS4 and Orbis hit the net yesterday the first thing I thought of was a small piece written for Official PlayStation 2 Magazine back in 2004. It was called “10 Glorious Decades In The Future Of PlayStation” – a supposedly throwaway back page regular charting a fictional century of Sony consoles.

    Access 17 - Naughty Dog

This week Access Tv visits Naughty Dog studios in Santa Monica to find out about survival drama The Last of Us. Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann explain the importance  of storytelling to quality games, and because they were the guys who made Uncharted 2, we listen really hard. Elsewhere we’ve got Spawn creator Todd McFarlane talking about his work on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (not covered: why the name is…
