Sony sell 5.3 million PS4s ahead of Japanese launch this week
Sony has issued a press release stating that the PS4 has “has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units around the world as of February 8, 2014″. And this week it goes on sale in Japan.
Last week Pachter was predicting a further 12 million sales this year which looks likely at this point. Sony boss Andrew House is unsurprisingly “thrilled” saying in the release that “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States”.
The PS4 goes on sale in Japan on February 22nd.

Tokyo, February 18, 2014 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units*1 around the world as of February 8, 2014 (JST), and is continuing to demonstrate strong growth and momentum.
