Gran Turismo 6 sold almost 3 million fewer copies in its opening month than Gran Turismo 5
Early sales figures for Gran Turismo 6 suggest that it’s selling at a much slower rate than series predecessor Gran Turismo 5. In just over a month since release, sales figure tracker VGChartz reports a total of 2,077,064 units sold globally – compared to GT5′s 5,066,169 units sold between November 27th and December 25th 2010.

Gran Turismo 6 sales figures
The numbers are most striking when comparing US sales figures. In December, analysis firm Cowen & Co estimates that GT6 sold 300,000 units stateside. Over the same period, GT5 sold 1,169,074 copies to American owners.
Perhaps its a parable for publishers who see huge current-gen install bases and assume the sales figures will follow suit, or maybe GT6 just needs a couple of months to get up to speed, where it’s no longer crowded out of the market by first wave next-gen games.
It’s not all doom and gloom though – there are reports circling currently that GTA V outsold the entire music industry in its opening month of release.
