Don’t Starve – basic food & recipes

Food can be divided in to these main categories initially: meat, vegetables, fruit/seeds and a couple of other more advanced things you don’t have to worry about until later. There’s also stuff you can cook and farm. Initially you can cook food on your fire and later use things like crock pots to unlock more complex recipes, or ice boxes to prolong the shelf life. The basic food and properties you’ll encounter right at the start of the game are as follows:

Carrot

  • Health – Raw 1, Cooked 3
  • Hunger  – Raw 12.5, Cooked 12.5
  • Sanity  – Raw 0, Cooked 0
  • Rots  – Raw 10 days,  Cooked 6 days

Seeds

  • Health – Raw 0, Cooked 1
  • Hunger  – Raw 4.7, Cooked 4.7
  • Sanity  – Raw 0, Cooked 0
  • Rots  – Raw 40 days,  Cooked 10 days

Berries

  • Health – Raw 0, Cooked 1
  • Hunger  – Raw 9.4, Cooked 12.5
  • Sanity  – Raw 0, Cooked 0
  • Rots  – Raw 6 days,  Cooked 3 days

Morsel (meat from captured Rabbits and other small animals)

  • Health – Raw 0, Cooked 1
  • Hunger  – Raw 12.5, Cooked 12.5
  • Sanity  – Raw -10, Cooked 0
  • Rots  – Raw 6 days,  Cooked 10 days

A trap is an easy and fast way to catch nutritious rabbits in Don’t Starve.

A quick way to get better food right at the start is to craft a trap to catch rabbits (just remember to cook the thing unless you want a hefty -10 sanity hit). You’ll need six cut grass and two sticks to make the trap and a carrot to use as bait. Craft the trap and leave it near a rabbit hole where a rabbit will start to cautiously hop towards it as long as you don’t get too close and scare it off. These can be left and returned to later. Traps will degrade with each use.

For more complicated food production you’ll need a science machine which unlocks things like the crock pot, drying rack and basic farm. But first…
