New PS4 game Evolve is a man vs monster co-op shooter from the creators of Left 4 Dead
The big GI cover reveal this month is Evolve, a co-op game from Left 4 Dead creators Turtle Rock. It’s a 4 vs 1 shooter that sets a team of humans hunting a player controlled monster.
Evolve’s future setting sees humans settling on a planet called Shear with Hunters charged with trying to clear the surface of dangerous animals for colonists. While a some sort of solo gameplay has been mentioned the experience is firmly focusesd on the co-op player-vs-monster hunt.

These hunts will take place in large environments populated with AI wildlife. The player controlling the monster will leave tracks, along other visual and sound cues for the hunter team to follow. It’s unclear whether these will be intentionally used as a lure or uncontrollable ‘tells’. The monster player will also be able to eat other animals to grow in size and power while having their own objectives which can be completed to win.

The hunter team consists of Assault (basic grunt), Medics (health boosts), Support (power ups and shields) and Trappers (containment). Players will only be able to revive three times before then it’s game over. Both characters and items can be upgraded. There’s no mention yet of monster classes or types.
Hunt mode will be joined by other as yet unannounced games.
