The tag line for the game is “Every planet procedural. Every planet unique. Every planet unexplored”. Hello Games’ Sean Murray showed the trailer explaining that “we wanted to make a game about exploration”. According to Murray “when you stand on a planet and you see a mountain three miles away you can walk there. If you can see it, you can walk there and you can explore it. If you see a planet you can go there. Those are real stars, they are suns and they have with planets around them and you can go visit them”.

The game focuses on first person combat on these planets and in space with Murray stating that “it’s an adversarial place. It’s not just wandering about passively. These are planets with an ecosystem and ecology and you are not always at the top of that chain”.

The rest of the details were filled in sparsely. It’s a MMO world: “We’re all playing in the same universe and there is persistence there, so if I do something…” mentioned Murray before being cut off. Next-gen platforms were also mentioned.
