The complete PS4 day one launch guide – everything you need for release
It’s barely weeks now until the PS4‘s is out so here’s a big list of everything you need to know. From the obvious stuff like price to more specific things like PS4 controller compatibilities, PS Plus usage, changing the PlayStation 4′s hard drive and so on.
Leave a comment if there’s anything else you want answered and I’ll add it in.
Keep up! The PS4 will release in the UK on November 29th. America obviously get an earlier launch on November 15th.
The basic no-thrills PS4 will cost you £349.
There’s a range of PS4 bundles but be aware that Watch Dogs has been delayed on PS4, Driveclub is also missing PlayStation 4′s launch. So neither of those are an option any more.
What’s in the PS4 box?
Sony’s official release info details the following:
- PlayStation®4 system × 1
- Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4) × 1
- Mono headset × 1
- AC power cord × 1
- HDMI cable × 1
- USB cable × 1
So that’s a 500GB console in “PlayStation®4 Jet Black”. One of the new DualShock 4 controllers, a mono ear bud and mic headset, an AC power lead, and a USB and an HDMI cable.
Shuhei’s confirmed it, saying “PS4′s HDD is upgradable like PS3 <3″ and there are already pictures showing how to remove and change a PS4′s hard drive. As far as we know it uses the same laptop style 2.5 inch SATA drive.
The PS4 has two USB 3.0 ports and one AUX port currently for the PlayStation Camera. You’ve also got an Ethernet port, HDMI and digital out sockets as well as the usual WiFi and Bluetooth. These are the official Sony specs :
- Input/Output Super-Speed USBx (USB 3.0) port × 2
- AUX port × 1
- Networking Ethernet （10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T）×1IEEE 802.11 b/g/nBluetooth® 2.1（EDR）
- AV output HDMI out port
- DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port
Can I use my PS4 DualShock with my PS3 or PC?
Yes. Yes you can. The PS4 pad controls PS3 games simply by syncing up but bear in mind you’ll only be able to do PS3 things with it so don’t expect to magically gain touchpad controlls on a PlayStation 3. Sony’s Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has also said the PS4 controller will be PC compatible in a similar way.
According again to Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida 4 is your limit so no three on three FIFA anymore.
Bit of a mixed message here. ‘Yes’ is technically the answer but only if, “a game is specifically programmed to allow such use of PS Vita”, according to Shuhei. So it’s not impossible, you’ll just have to wait to see if anyone does it.
No, sorry. They’re too different. Not only does the PS4 have improved motion controls and gyros, and a touchpad, even the buttons are different. Sony dropped the pressure sensitive buttons used on PlayStation 3 because no one used them. So apart from all the other features the PS4 controller has simple on/off buttons that won’t know what to do wit the 250 odd pressure states the PS3 pad can measure. You can Keep your Move though.
Not yet although you do get a free headset with the PS4 so don’t get too sad. However, PS4 won’t support Bluetooth or USB headsets at launch, with the function being patched in post-launch
Eventually. Like headsets and a few other features this is something being patched in after launch. The issue here is that traditionally HDMI capture was blocked with copy protection. PS3 video makers got around it by using the component out. On PS4 there is only HDMI. But, while the console ships with protection on, Sony are going to patch it out after launch.
No. Think of PS Plus as a big smothering online blanket that covers everything. It doesn’t matter whether you get it for PS3, Vita or PS4, the same subscription works across all platforms.
Do I have to get PS Plus?
You do if you want to play online. Many of the PS4′s features are free and don’t need PS Plus, including voice chat, free-to-play games, video recording and streaming, but mutiplayer isn’t.
Nothing to be scared of. The ‘Red Line Of Death’ is an over heating indicator where the blue line on the PS4 turns red when the machine gets too hot. It happened to a couple of demo units that had been shut in display cases. As soon as the cases were opened and ventilated the PS4s went back to normal. So everyone calm down. I heard it goes purple when it breaks. JOKING.
Can I upgrade my sub account to a master account for PS4?
At the moment, no. The wording on the PlayStation Knowledge Center is pretty clear: “Once a sub-account is created, it cannot be changed to a master account even if the account holder becomes older than 18 years old.”
