Braid creator and Thekla Inc. founder Jonathan Blow has been speaking about his PS4 puzzle game The Witness. A recent playtest has revealed the “eight hour game” actually stretches somewhere between 25 to 40 hours depending on how much non-essential stuff you do.
The Witness is a puzzle game set on an island that Blow describes as, “an open world”, adding, “you can go anywhere you want, and the game does not try to force you into a linear path”. The bulk of the work up until now has involved getting the island, “built in a gameplay sense”, which involved, “trying it out, moving things around, developing location concepts, tweaking puzzles”. Now Blow says, “most of that stuff is figured out, so we are now going through all the areas of the island and detailing them”.
In fact it seems the scale of the island (“very big”) has caught the development team off guard. When the studio recently played through the game, “from start to finish, to get a fresh perspective”, the total play time averaged out at around, “25-40 hours depending on how much you play”, with Blow pointing out that, “some of the game is optional”.
This world uses a custom built engine from the team and their current efforts are focusing on, “making the game run with a smooth and solid frame rate, and making the graphics look as nice as possible, and ensuring that the streaming system loads things quickly”.
