What is the GTA 5 conspiracy & can *you* solve the UFO mystery?
[Read up on more GTA 5 secrets & Easter eggs that don't need 100% completion]
What is GTA 5′s big alien conspiracy? Shadowy men in black, UFOs, strange symbols and murals abound in Grand Theft Auto 5 but what does it all mean? And can you solve it? Here are all the facts and details that have been unearthed so far by fans and what they could mean.
It all started with a number of odd clues scattered throughout GTA 5. A view point on Mount Chiliad has the message “Come back when your story is complete” scrawled on the decking. The cable car station has a strange ancient painting marked with symbols. Then? Then there’s the sunken UFO at the bottom of the sea near the North coast of Los Santos, just above Paleto Bay.
Okay, that last one’s a bit more obvious but it doesn’t stop there. In this excellent bit of investigation from CVG there have been three actual flying UFOs discovered (as well as the sunken one). While anyone can find the one at sea, the rest require a 100% complete game. The conditions, location and craft are all different but there are a few things in common – clues to their location can be found on the ground, they appear suddenly in a somewhat trial and error search and get too close and your plane or chopper will lose power and crash.
Here are the UFOs and artefacts discovered so far:
1. Mount Chiliad
Go to the Mount Chiliad cable station (where the ‘return when your story is complete”message is hidden) at 3am when it’s raining. The UFO that appears has FBI printed on the side which is a part of the conspiracy we’ll come to in a moment. This is the only one so far you can see on foot.
2. Fort Zancudo
At Fort Zancudo there’s a strange bunker that occasionally shines out spotlights. Fly over it at maximum altitude and large black UFO appears. This one has no FIB markings, suggesting it’s a ‘real’ one.
3. Sandy Shores
North-East of Sandy Shores there a monument that mentions aliens, both with words and a pictures. Again, fly as high above this as you can and you’ll find a gold version of the first UFO, again marked with FIB logos.
4. The Ocean
The non-flying UFO can be found sunk of the north coast of Los Santos, above Paleto Bay.
5. Mountains east of Blaine County
A potential 5th UFO has been located via a strange glowing red outline embedded in a mountain just east of Blaine County. Like the UFO’s themselves there’s a certain element of trial and error to finding it as it only appears if you stand in just the right place.
6 The alien egg
There’s not a lot to add here other than: look, there’s an alien egg under the sea near the base with the submarine. It doesn’t seem to do anything and is only referenced in the map below so far, but it must play some part.
Some people think the mural found in the cable car station needs to be placed over the GTA 5 map although no one’s quite sure how. The shot to the right shows the most popular placement so far. The three images at the bottom show a UFO, jet pack and egg leading some to believe that a flyable UFO and jet pack can be unlocked somehow. As for the egg, someone’s found something that looks like the classic Alien movie under the sea near where Trevor gets the submarine for his heist (there’s also a frozen alien under the lake in the opening mission).
While you can only access the main UFO’s after completing the game that’s not the only thing that changes. FIB agents appear in a couple of locations, specifically near a shack off the north east highway and by the satellites dishes in the desert. They won’t do anything while you look at them and wait quite a while for you to stop paying attention before they make any move after.
This only seems to be the start though. There are symbols scattered all over the map showing UFOs over moons, or mountains. There’s an underwater hatch originally thought to be a Lost reference. There’s the side mission that tasks you with collecting ‘UFO parts’ for a conspiracy theorist that, when completed, rewards you with a trippy space car. It’s function is unknown and it’s not actually been linked to anything (despite having a really cool horn) but at this point every thing’s fair game.
Even Franklin’s aunt is under suspicion. There’s are several references to the illuminati and the ‘all seeing eye’ symbol. For example, there’s the main conspiracy map itself, plus at 3pm shadows of a monument at the observatory form an eye on the ground. There’s also this picture to the right in Franklin’s aunt’s house.
Elsewhere glyphs, symbols and even poems seem to point towards some great mystery yet to be unlocked within Grand Theft Auto 5. The trouble is these seem to bleed into another puzzle in GTA 5: the murder of Leonora Johnson. This is solved by collecting 50 letter scraps hidden throughout Los Santos. Of the two poems the first definitely has a serial killer vibe to it:
One is done
Two was fun
three tried to run Four called mom
Fives not alive
Six is nix
Sevens in heaven
8 won’t wait
While the second could tie into the UFO mystery with talk of ‘people’ and signs:
If they want me they can have
But the’ll never get my people
Even though I shall leave them sign enough
Where they put me
It’s led some to suspect a link between the murder and the UFOs – some sort of cover up, or cult involvement behind the alien presence.
So, think you can make a difference? A huge number of people are currently scouring the map for more references, symbols and strange occurrences. Whether you’ve finished the game or not, keep an eye out for anything strange because you might just find the clue that ties it all together.
