The reports suggest the virtual reality headset was due to be revealed at Gamescom but pulled at the last minute. Appreantly the messaging has yet to be decided as to whether the device is to be a “a key differentiator for the console or a non-essential add-on”.
There have been industry whisperings for a while that Sony had been seeking a partnership with Oculus Rift (T3 even mocked up what a PS4 Oculus Rift would look like) now this headset would essentially be a direct rival. Evolution Studios are said to be “working with the device to simulate a cockpit view in Driveclub”.
Shuhei Yoshida gave a vague answer recently when asked about the possibility of a headset for PS4 saying, “We’re Sony, so we have lots of different things and different ideas in R&D.” If the headset exsists its said be marketed as a separate peripheral to so as not to affect the core PS4 price. Sony already have 3D headset, although the HMZ-T2 Personal 3D Viewer currently clocks in at £999.99.
