The Last Guardian lives on following E3 confusion, still in “active development”
[Update: The Last Guardian's Fumito Ueda claims it's still in "earnest development".]
The Last Guardian is “alive and kicking” and in “active development” says Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony’s worldwide studios. Countering a previous report that the game was, “on hiatus”.
The Last Guardian survives another scare
Fears that Team Ico’s third game may have been cancelled were fueled after SCEA boss Jack Tretton, said: “Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it’s on hiatus right now”.
However, Shuhei Yoshida has now said the opposite, “Yes, the game is in active development. It’s not hiatus at all”. According to Yoshida, “If you visit Japan Studio there are lots of people working on it. But as [designer Fumito Ueda] shared with people a couple of months ago, we really want to be confident next time when we introduce The Last Guardian to the public, so we are waiting for that time to come.” So it’s not dead, just resting, with Yoshida adding, “But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait.”
The game has been delayed twice since its E3 announcement four years ago. It hit an all time low in 2011 when lead designer Fumita Ueda left his in-house role at Sony, however Yoshida confirms Ueda is continuing his job on the game: “[Lead designer Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed”. Good news then for the furry-feathered hopefully. Questions still linger on which console the game will be making its long awaited appearance on. PlayStation 4 seems likely as last we heard The Last Guardian has become a PS4 game.
