PS Plus subscription required for online gaming on PS4
Sony has confirmed that you’ll need to subscribe to PS Plus in order to play PS4 games online. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained that the PS Plus subscription covers the cost of Sony’s massive server-side investments for PS4.
Online gaming on PS4 requires PS Plus subscription
Speaking with Gamespot, Sony confirmed the mandatory PS Plus subscription for online gaming after its E3 2013 conference. Currently a year’s subscription costs £39.99, though it’s yet to be confirmed how much it’ll cost on PS4.
The news comes after confirmation of the PS4′s pricing at £349, making it the cheaper of the two major combatants in the next-gen console war by £80, which softens the blow.
Sony also confirmed at its presentation – to spirited applause – that the PS4 places no DRM restrictions on used games. Factoring in what’s likely to be a £39.99 annual subscription to play games online, Sony’s box of tricks is still looking decent value.
