Forget The Phantom Pain‘s smoke and mirrors for a second: the real Hideo Kojima has spoken actual words about what he’s, “trying to accomplish with Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes“. The thrust of it is everything. He’s trying to do everything.
Ground Zeroes to “a true open world experience”
According to Kojima, “As far as stealth is concerned, you don’t normally just start in a building. If you look at spy and action movies, how the hero gets to that point is a very important part of the story and part of the action. Do they get there by plane or by some sort of disguise? There are many ways you can approach that element of infiltration”. However ,he explains, the technical limitation of the MSX and PS1 originally held back these ideas.
However, it now looks like technology has reached a point where Kojima can achieve, well, anything. “My ultimate goal is to give players even more freedom,” he explains, “not only to figure out how they’re going to get there but really have everything factor into it. So, do you want to get there by helicopter, or do you want to get there by plane, are you going to ride in a vehicle, or are you going to take a bike? Basically have all of these options available to the player”.
We’ve already seen how Ground Zeroes lets you call up a helicopter at will, or drive around in a jeep, now it seems Kojima wants to really open up MGS’ brand of stealth. “Up until now Metal Gear has more or less been set on one path” he says. “Like you’re set on one rail to get from point A to point B, with a certain amount of freedom between. What I want to do is create a true open world experience. Where the player has all these options available to them and really limitless gameplay. That’s what I’m trying to accomplish with my next project, Ground Zeroes”
What I want to do is create a true open world where the player has all these options available to them and really limitless gameplay.
It certainly might explain why Ground Zeroes isn’t a numbered entry in the series. There’s a hint of things like Mercenary or Just Cause 2′s style of action to what he’s describing, which would make it a huge departure from what most fans would consider a Metal Gear game. We’ll find out more at the upcoming GDC where Kojima is set to present a talk on Ground Zeroes and his new FOX engine.
