October 2001 – GTA 3 launches

The blocky, unspeaking face that launched a thousand 3D sandbox imitations, Grand Theft Auto 3 drove the series away from the top-down view of its predecessors and skidded gloriously into the third dimension, knocking down pedestrians, lamposts – but not trees – as it went. It wasn’t the first 3D open world adventure but it was the one that made the genre a mainstay and it did so on PS2 thanks to Sony signing an exclusivity deal with Rockstar. Those were the days.
