Grand Theft Auto 3
We don’t really have to spell this one out for you in classic Sesame Street Count von Count style, right? Arguably the most influential 3D game that’s ever been made, Rockstar’s first crack at a criminal 3D sandbox went on to define a new genre. While the likes of the N64’s Body Harvest had already introduced players to expansive open-worlds years before, it was GTA 3 that really laid down the template for all future sandbox games. From establishing how players accepted missions, buggering about for hours on end with side activities like taxi driving or the way we think of music in game thanks to Liberty City’s seamless radio stations; GTA 3 was a true (ultra sweary) pioneer.
