Hands up if when a game logo crackles and splutters to life, or when a soundtrack grates through your speakers like it’s being broadcast by a meat grinder, that you think; ‘wow, that’s really made me feel immersed in this game’s fiction.’ Exactly (I’m assuming no-one has their hands up). Stop doing it games, because it’s teeth-gnawingly irritating. No matter what grainy film effects you smear all over the screen, no matter how much you make it look like what I’m playing is being beamed to my television by a cardboard router somewhere in a cave in the Middle East – it doesn’t make your game seem more real.
