The first western game for PS1 is the reason most British gamers bought a Playstation. Sure, the beautiful port of Ridge Racer didn’t hurt, but Wipeout was the vanguard of the Playstation Generation – a videogame that was actually cool even if you didn’t like videogames. A soundtrack by Leftfield, Orbital, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers made Wipeout cool by association alone, and Sony promoted it by touring clubs around the UK. Suddenly, games were on popular culture’s cutting edge, and Sony built a house on that edge where they lived for the next decade.
