Is this the PS3 super slim?
Leaked documents have emerged that appear to show a new, even slimmer model of PS3. The CECH-4001x (current 320GB slim models are branded CECH-30xxb) could well be the PS3 super slim, which is rumoured to be revealed at Gamescom in August.
Eurogamer uncovered the leaked documents via Japanese news site Pocket Gamer, which were filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and appear to show a new, slimmed-down version of the PS3 – though Sony has yet to confirm or deny this.
The documents mention that the ‘x’ suffix will be replaced by an as yet unspecified hard drive specification – which suggests that Sony’s looking to increase capacity of its PS3 models while shrinking its dimensions further.
The latest revision of the PS3 Slim was in July 2010, and introduced 160GB and 320GB models while phasing out the 120GB version in Japan.
Along with a 32% size reduction and 36% weight drop, the Slim model is also considerably more energy efficient – another area that this new model would be likely to improve further on (we’d be pretty surprised if it was 32% smaller again though, that’s nearly Vita territory).
At E3, Kaz Hirai suggested that Sony may yet release another revision of the PS3. That, along with these newly surfaced documents, has led to strong industry rumours that the PS3 super slim will be revealed at Gamescom.
