Resident Evil 6 characters: who can, and who can’t come back?

resi_6_featured_done

There are more characters in the Resident Evil series than any sane person could remember. Every game introduces us to a dozen new faces, most of whom end up dead at the hands of some virus-infected monstrosity. But what about the survivors? Capcom love fan-pleasing cameos, and while the Resident Evil 6 trailer introduces a few familier faces you can expect more. To figure out who they might be, we’ve gone back through the series – from Resident Evil Zero onwards – to find out who’s likely, and unlikely, to make an appearance in the new game.

Watch the new Resident Evil 6 trailer now.

S.T.A.R.S.

The Special Tactics and Rescue Service, or S.T.A.R.S. for short, were a division of the Raccoon City Police Department. They were formed in 1996 to combat terrorism and violent crime in the city, and many of Resident Evil’s main characters were once members.

Chris Redfield
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil (1996) - Last seen Resident Evil 5 (2009)

Weapons expert, pilot, beefcake. Chris has been around since the beginning, and has abandoned S.T.A.R.S. to join the B.S.A.A., or Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. Apparently he only joins organisations with big, confusing names.

After surviving the mansion outbreak (Resident Evil), Chris made a brief stop in Antarctica to rescue his sister (Resident Evil Code: Veronica), before travelling to Kijuju, Africa to arrest a biological weapons dealer (Resident Evil 5).

When we last saw him he was blowing his old nemesis Albert Wesker’s head off with a rocket launcher, but his work is far from over. In Resident Evil 6 he’s still with the B.S.A.A. and travels to Hong Kong to stop a deadly bio-terrorist.

Jill Valentine
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil (1996) – Last seen Resident Evil 5 (2009)

Jill was Chris’ partner in the original Resident Evil, and another survivor of the mansion outbreak. She was in charge of ‘rear security’ (snigger) in S.T.A.R.S. and is an expert in bomb disposal, close-quarters combat and bad voice acting.

After escaping the mansion, Jill began searching for a secret Umbrella lab said to be hidden beneath Raccoon City (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis). Her efforts were hindered by the release of the G-Virus, and the fearsome bio-weapon ‘Nemesis’ that was sent to kill her.

We next saw Jill in Resident Evil 5, brainwashed by Wesker and turned against Chris. She was eventually broken free of his control and later helped her old partner defeat his long-time nemesis and for all. Jill is almost certain to appear in Resident Evil 6.

Claire Redfield
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil 2 (1998) - Last seen Resident Evil Code: Veronica (2000)

Claire travelled to Raccoon City to find her brother, Chris Redfield, but when she arrived the G-Virus had already taken hold of the city. She teamed up with rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy, a new member of S.T.A.R.S., and together they escaped the stricken city.
Claire then starred in her own game, Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Once again on the trail of Chris, she was captured in Paris by Umbrella and sent to the prison island of Rockfort. She escaped, discovering the location of a secret Umbrella base in the Arctic.

Chris tracked Claire to the Arctic, and together they defeated a mysteriously not-dead Wesker, destroyed the base and escaped on a jet. Claire hasn’t been seen since. While she’s one of the series’ most important characters Clair Redfield’s voice actress, Alyson Court recently tweeted that she’s not involved with the game so the chance of an appearance now is if the character’s been recast.

Barry Burton
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil (1996) - Last seen Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)

Barry is a gun nut, and an old pal of Chris Redfield’s. He was one of the handful of members of the original S.T.A.R.S. team to survive the mansion incident. He was briefly an accomplice of Albert Wesker, but only because he’d threatened to have his family killed.

Barry moved to Canada after his escape from the mansion, taking his family with him, but he returned during the events of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Just before the city was destroyed by a missile strike, Barry rescued Jill in a helicopter and flew her out of the blast zone.

Barry hasn’t been seen or heard of since, although there’s a teasing comment on the Resi 6′s viral site No Hope Left from a ‘B Burton‘. He’s one of the series’ most well-known characters, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Capcom slipped him in somewhere – maybe to rescue someone by helicopter at the last minute, which seems to be his ‘thing’ now.

Leon S. Kennedy
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil 2 (1998) - Last seen Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Leon arrived in Raccoon City during the G-Virus outbreak at the same time as Claire Redfield. Together they agreed to look for survivors, later helping each other escape the city. During this escape the duo rescue a little girl, Sherry Birkin (more on her later).

During the events of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, we learn that Leon joined the U.S. Government after fleeing from Raccoon City. In Resident Evil 4 we find out that he’s now a special agent for the United States Secret Service, sworn to protect the President.

Ashley Graham, the President’s daughter, is kidnapped by a cult, and Leon goes to Spain to rescue her. Here he gets caught up in the Las Plagas outbreak. In Resident Evil 6 he’s still with the Secret Service, and seems to be in the middle of yet another outbreak.

Rebecca Chambers
Status Alive
First appearance Resident Evil (1996) - Last seen Resident Evil Zero (2002)

Rebecca was sent to Raccoon Forest to investigate a series of strange murders, but her helicopter broke down. Searching the area, she finds an abandoned prison van and the corpses of the guard and driver. The prisoner was on the loose.

Rebecca catches up with the prisoner, Billy Coen, and the pair find themselves in the midst of the first ever T-Virus outbreak. They form an uneasy alliance and help each other escape. Two two split, and Rebecca finds refuge in a mansion.

The same mansion that the rest of the S.T.A.R.S. team find in the first game. Rebecca manages to survive the mansion incident, but that’s the last we saw of her. Her starring role in Resident Evil Zero made her a fan favourite, so it’s possible she could return in RE6.
