New XCOM game anounced
It’s called XCOM: Enemy Unknown (I’m going out on a hunch and guessing it’s the shaved monkey in front of the car) and will be a full on turn based strategy affair harking back to the game’s roots. The other more shooty XCOM is still in development at 2K Marin (both are from Take Two).
The big sell is that it’s being working on by Firaxis Games, the legendary Civilisation developer founded by Sid Meier. They made Civilization Revolution on PS3 which was a great example of how to make an entertaining strategy game work on console.
It’s been announced in Game Informer who say it’s a “full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force”. It sounds pretty deep too. “XCOM’s leader needs a worldwide perspective where threats are identified, populations reassured, and national leaders mollified – but a tactical mind is just as critical considering every shot XCOM’s soldiers fire on the battlefield is under the player’s turn-based control”. So a cross between Battlefield Los Angeles and G8 then.
Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games, has the usual “huge fans of the original game” quote. There’s more over at GI’s page.
