Is Troy Baker the new Nolan North?
Chances are you might not know the name but you’ve heard his voice a lot this year, and you’re going to be hearing it a lot more. With a formidable CV including Batman: Arkham City, BioShock Infinite and Modern Warfare 3, Baker has now been cast as Joel in Naughty Dog’s newest, The Last Of Us – taking a role many assumed would automatically be Nolan Norths. Oh, and while it may look (a lot) like Ellen Page playing fourteen year old Ellie, Baker’s co star is actually 28 year old Ashley Johnson. (We’ve some The Last Of Us screens if you want to see the characters, and a The Last Of Us trailer if you want to hear them speak.)
As well as his recent stint as Two Face in Arkham City and upcoming performance as Booker De Witt in BioShock Infinite, Baker has an impressive list of roles under his belt. Like Nolan he’s been in loads of stuff without you ever knowing, including the last three Call Of Duties, Darksiders, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Saints Row: The Third (as ‘default player voice’ no less!), Final Fantasy XIII-2 and plenty more. Again, like North he’s multitalented, playing heroes and comedy characters with ease – Nova in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom one minute and Espio the chameleon in Sonic the next. Baker is also known as the voice of Frank Archer in Japan’s Fullmetal Alchemist.
His wiki page already lists over 60 videogame roles and in 2012 Baker will also take over the voice of James in the Silent Hill 2 HD remake and star as Vincent in upcoming genre buster Catherine. BioShock Infinite and The Last Us however could be his breakout roles and mean that guy you hear in every game next year might not be Nolan North.
