Next game from LA Noire director called “Whore of the Orient”

Brendan McNamara whore of the orient

That is going to look great on the posters in Game. The info was released via an interview with filmmaker George Miller in Australian Financial Review where he says he’s aquired the rights to Brendan McNamara’s next game. So what could it be about?

‘Whore of the Orient’ is actually a non-too-flattering nickname for Shanghai. McNamara’s previously told Eurogamer that his next game is “one of the great untold stories of the 20th Century”. If you look into the history of Shanghai there’s a rich list of war, upheaval and conflict but nothing that immediately says ‘mainstream gaming potential’. That is until you find out about the Shanghai Ghetto. This was an area of Japanese-occupied Shanghai that became home to huge numbers of Jewish refugees escaping Nazi persecution in the build up to WW2.

Poking around the history a little bit more turns up a book called Secret War in Shanghai: An Untold Story of Espionage, Intrigue, and Treason in World War II. That says Shanghai was where “Allied and Axis agents, criminal gangs, and paramilitary units under various flags waged secret, savage warfare.” It certainly fits ‘Shanghai’, ‘untold’ and ’20th century’. So there you go, McNamara’s next game is a WW2 espionage thriller set in Shanghai, I’m calling it.
